How do I make my LinkedIn profile work for job hunting?
Fix your photo, headline, About section and Skills in about 90 minutes so your profile actually surfaces in recruiter searches.

Short answer
Open your profile in a desktop browser: upload a sharp 400x400 pixel headshot, add a 1584x396 pixel banner, fill the 220-character headline with title + specialty + tools, write three paragraphs in About, add 15-20 skills and pin the top three, then shorten your profile URL to your name. Total time is roughly 90 minutes.
What you need
Step by step
Upload your photo and banner
Click the photo circle on your profile page and choose Add photo. Use a square image of at least 400x400 pixels where your face fills roughly 60 percent of the frame. Then click the pencil icon at the top right and choose Add background photo for the 1584x396 pixel image. Profiles with no photo get passed over when you apply.
Fill all 220 characters of the headline
Click the pencil icon on your profile card to open the Edit intro window. In the Headline field, go past your job title and use the formula: title + area of expertise + tools you work with. Example: Finance Specialist | Budgeting and Cash Flow Reporting | SAP, Excel, Power BI. This is the most heavily scanned field in search.
Write three paragraphs in About
Go to Add profile section > Core > About. Paragraph one is what you do in two or three sentences. Paragraph two is two measurable results, such as cut monthly close from 8 days to 4 with a team of three. Paragraph three is what you are looking for. The limit is 2,600 characters, but 900 to 1,200 is plenty.
Rebuild each job entry around results
Use Add profile section > Core > Add experience for your positions from the last ten years, and pick the company from the dropdown so the logo shows. For each role write three or four result bullets instead of a duty list, with numbers: percentages, amounts, timeframes, headcount. Use the Career break option to account for gaps.
Add skills and pin the top three
Go to Add profile section > Core > Skills and enter 15 to 20 skills taken from the keywords in your target postings (50 is the maximum). Then use the pencil icon in the Skills section to pin your top three. Recruiters search for these exact skill names in LinkedIn Recruiter.
Shorten your profile URL
At the top right of your profile page click Edit public profile & URL, then use the pencil icon at the top right of the panel to change the address to linkedin.com/in/yourname. Put that version on your CV and in your email signature instead of the long one with random digits.
Turn on your job search settings
Press the Open to button on your profile and fill in the Finding a new job option: job titles, city, work arrangement. If you set visibility to Recruiters only, the green frame stays hidden from everyone else. Choose that if you do not want your current employer to see it.
Tips
Watch out
The most common mistake is overhauling your profile while employed and leaving the Open to work frame visible to everyone, where your current employer can see it. Turn off edit notifications first and set your open-to-work status to Recruiters only. Also never put a national ID number, home address or date of birth on your profile; those fields are public.
Frequently asked questions
+Does it work without LinkedIn Premium?
Yes. Editing your profile, applying to jobs, adding skills and appearing in recruiter searches all work fully on a free account. Premium only adds extras like the full list of profile viewers and InMail.
+Is a photo required, and does it need to be a formal headshot?
It is not required, but profiles without a photo get opened far less often. No studio needed: a sharp shoulders-up square shot taken on your phone in daylight against a plain wall is enough.
+I have no work experience. How do I fill the Experience section?
Internships, long-term volunteering, a university club role and freelance jobs all count as Experience. Also add the Projects and Certifications sections and link to the work you have done.
+How long before profile updates produce results?
Showing up in search results usually takes a few days. If you refresh your profile weekly and keep applying, first messages within two to four weeks is normal.
+Should I write in my local language or in English?
If you are targeting local companies, keep your main profile in your local language. If you want a multinational or a remote role abroad, add English as a second profile language and fill both with the same keywords.
