How do you compare quotes when renewing an insurance policy?

How to line up coverages on equal terms before you accept a renewal quote, then switch without leaving a gap in cover.

Short answer

Pull your current policy and your no-claims step from the Insurance Information and Monitoring Centre service on e-Devlet. Write every coverage, limit and deductible into one table. Ask for quotes using that same coverage set from agents, your bank's app and comparison sites. Judge cost per unit of coverage, not the headline premium, and make sure the new policy starts the moment the old one ends.

What you need

e-Devlet password, mobile signature or e-signature
PDF copy or number of your current policy
Vehicle registration, or title deed and utility details for a home policy
A simple table to log coverages (paper or spreadsheet)

Step by step

01

Download the current policy and its history

On the e-Devlet portal, search for "Sigorta Bilgi ve Gozetim Merkezi" and open the policy enquiry service. View your active policy and save it as a PDF. If you are renewing motor cover, note your claims record and no-claims step from the same menu, because that discount travels with you to the new insurer.

02

Build the coverage table

Copy the Coverages section of your policy into the table line by line: coverage name, limit, deductible and any condition attached. For comprehensive motor cover, give replacement vehicle, glass breakage, minor repair, approved garages and spare part type their own rows. Without this table you cannot tell which quote is genuinely broader.

03

Ask your insurer for the renewal offer in writing

Open My Policies in your current insurer's app and start Renew or Get Quote; if you work through an agent, request the same offer by email. Insist on the full coverage breakdown, not just the premium figure. That is the only way to see which coverages were quietly dropped from last year's policy.

04

Collect quotes on identical terms from several channels

Use the Get Quote step under the Insurance menu in your bank's online branch, plus independent agents and comparison sites. Hand every channel the exact coverage set from your table, because a quote with missing coverage will always look cheaper. Note each quote's validity period and which company actually issues the policy.

05

Compare the quotes row by row

Add one column per quote and mark every difference in coverage, limit and deductible. Deductible amounts, how many times a coverage can be used per policy year, and the approved garage network are the items people miss most often. Shortlist whichever quote gives the lowest premium at equal coverage.

06

Check the insurer's claims performance

Before you commit, look at how the company pays and how it handles complaints: publications from the insurance regulator and decisions of the Insurance Arbitration Commission both give a useful signal. Verify the approved garage and health provider lists on the insurer's own site. A cheap premium is worthless if no approved garage is near you.

07

Issue the policy with no gap in cover

Approve your chosen quote, pay, and confirm that the new policy starts the moment the old one expires. Download the policy PDF and check every detail line by line: plate number, address and the full coverage list. If anything is wrong, request a written endorsement to correct it.

08

Verify the record and file everything

After a few business days, return to the policy enquiry screen on e-Devlet and confirm the new policy appears in the central records. Keep the policy, the payment receipt and your comparison table in one folder. That folder makes next year's comparison far faster.

Tips

Read deductibles and limits before you look at the premium; a policy made cheap by raising the deductible simply moves the cost to your pocket at claim time.
Your no-claims step transfers to a new insurer, so check the quote breakdown to confirm the step was entered correctly.
Do not settle for a single channel: the same insurer's policy can be priced differently through an agent, a bank and the direct channel.
Compare instalment and payment term options too; a quote that looks cheap upfront can total more once instalments are added.
Give identical answers on address, mileage and usage in every quote, otherwise the numbers are not comparable.

Watch out

The most common mistake is switching policies on premium alone without reading the coverages. A cheap policy with gaps only reveals itself at claim time, and by then it cannot be fixed. The second is forgetting to start the new policy before the old one expires and going uninsured in between; with compulsory cover that means both an administrative penalty and full personal liability for any loss.

Frequently asked questions

+Do I lose my no-claims discount if I change insurer?

No. Your no-claims step is held in central records and the new insurer queries and applies it. Just confirm on the quote breakdown that the step is reflected correctly.

+Are comparison sites safe to use?

Sites operating through a licensed agent or broker are fine to use. If the quote screen shows which company issues the policy and that the intermediary is licensed, go ahead.

+Can I negotiate my current insurer's renewal quote?

Usually yes. Share the other quotes you hold and ask for a revised offer at the same coverage; insurers often improve either the coverage or the premium to keep a customer.

+Can I change my mind after renewing?

You can cancel the policy and claim a refund of the premium for the unused period. Cancellation terms are set out in the policy's general conditions, so submit your request to the insurer in writing.

+Which item makes the biggest difference when comparing quotes?

The deductible amount, the approved garage network and the spare part type. If these three are not matched across quotes, the premium difference is misleading.
