How do you cancel a digital subscription and get a refund?

How to cancel in-app and web digital subscriptions, switch off auto-renewal, and file a refund claim for a charge you never wanted.

Short answer

First find out which channel took the money: the App Store, Google Play, or the service's own website. Cancel from that channel's Subscriptions screen. Then open a claim through the same channel's refund form (Report a Problem for Apple, Report a problem for Google Play). If the answer is no, dispute the charge with your bank and file a complaint through the consumer application system.

What you need

Login details for the Apple ID, Google account, or service account the subscription sits on
The bank or credit card statement, or mobile banking transaction detail, showing the charge
The purchase confirmation email or invoice number
A phone or computer for taking screenshots
Your e-Devlet password, if you move on to the complaint stage

Step by step

01

Identify the billing channel

Open the transaction description in your mobile banking app. If it mentions Apple or iTunes, the subscription came through the App Store; if it mentions Google or Google Play, it came through Play Store. If the service's own name appears, it is managed from that site's account page. Trying to cancel from the wrong channel is the single most common mistake, so do not skip this.

02

Cancel the App Store subscription

On an iPhone or iPad open Settings, tap your name at the top, and go to "Subscriptions". Select the subscription, tap "Cancel Subscription", and confirm. The screen should then state that the subscription will not renew; do not leave before you see that line.

03

Cancel the Google Play subscription

Open the Play Store app, tap the profile icon at the top right, then follow "Payments and subscriptions" > "Subscriptions". Select the subscription, tap "Cancel subscription", pick a reason from the list, and confirm with "Continue". You can do the same on a computer at play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.

04

Close a subscription bought on the site

Open the service's website in a browser and use the "Cancel subscription" or "Cancel plan" link, usually under "Account", "My account", or "Membership". Some services only accept cancellation on the web, so the option never appears inside the app. Keep the cancellation confirmation email that arrives afterwards.

05

File the refund claim with the store

For Apple, sign in at reportaproblem.apple.com with your Apple ID, find the transaction, choose "Report a Problem", and explain the reason. For Google Play, open the subscription in your purchase history and follow "Report a problem" or "Request a refund". Keep the claim short and factual: what was charged, and why you did not want it.

06

Write to the service's own support

If the store refuses the refund, open a written claim through the service's own support channel. Use the "Help" or "Support" menu in the app and pick email over live chat where possible, so there is a record. Attach the invoice number, your account email, and a screenshot of the cancellation confirmation.

07

Use the bank dispute and consumer complaint route

If no reply comes, call your bank, open a card chargeback record, and ask for the reference number. In parallel, file a Consumer Arbitration Committee application through tuketicisikayeti.ticaret.gov.tr or the "Tüketici Başvuru Sistemi" service on e-Devlet. Upload the cancellation confirmation, the statement, and your correspondence as evidence.

08

Check that the charges have stopped

Review your statement over the first renewal period after cancelling. If the charge continues, the same subscription may still be active on another account or another store, so check the "Subscriptions" screen in both stores separately. If needed, talk to your bank about moving to a virtual card.

Tips

A cancelled subscription usually stays usable until the end of the period you already paid for; keeping access for a while is normal and does not mean the cancellation failed.
For subscriptions with a trial period, add the renewal date to your phone calendar as a reminder; refunds get much harder once the cancellation window has passed.
Take a screenshot at every step: the cancellation confirmation screen, the form you sent, and the replies you receive. This chain of records is what helps most at the complaint stage.
Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. The charge keeps coming out of your store account, so always switch it off from the Subscriptions screen.
For subscriptions billed in a foreign currency, exchange differences and card fees can appear as separate lines on your statement; refer to the main transaction amount in your dispute.

Watch out

The most common mistake is cancelling on the service's own site without noticing that payment was taken through the App Store or Google Play. Your service account closes, but the store keeps charging you. Always confirm the billing channel from your statement, and check refund conditions and deadlines against the store's or service's current policy.

Frequently asked questions

+Do I get my money back automatically when I cancel?

No. Cancelling only stops the next renewal. For money already taken you have to open a separate claim through the store's or the service's refund form.

+What can I do if Apple or Google rejects my refund request?

You can resubmit the request with added reasoning and write to the service's own support. If that leads nowhere, open a card dispute with your bank and apply to the Consumer Arbitration Committee.

+If I cancel my card, does the subscription end too?

The charges may stop, but the subscription can stay open as unpaid debt and your account may be suspended. The right move is not swapping the card but cancelling from the subscription screen.

+Do I have a right of withdrawal for a digital service?

For digital content and services, the right of withdrawal depends on whether performance has already started. Check the seller's withdrawal terms and the Ministry of Trade consumer guidance for your own case.

+How do I cancel if I bought it on someone else's account?

Cancellation happens on the Apple ID or Google account the payment is tied to. If you cannot sign in to that account, the account holder has to complete it from their Subscriptions screen.
