How do you cancel a hotel booking without paying a fee?
Read your booking's cancellation policy, then cancel from the right screen so no penalty is charged.

Short answer
Check the cancellation policy in your confirmation email first. If the booking is free-cancellation, open the platform you booked on, go to "My Bookings", open the record and complete "Cancel booking". Confirm the fee line shows zero before you approve, then keep the cancellation email. If the rate is non-refundable, call the hotel directly and ask to move the dates or transfer the stay.
What you need
Step by step
Read the cancellation policy
Open the confirmation email or voucher and find the "Cancellation Policy" section. It states whether the booking is "Free cancellation" or "Non-refundable" and exactly when the free window closes. Starting a cancellation on a wrong assumption can make you approve a charge.
Find the booking in your account
Open the app you booked through: "Trips" or "My Bookings" on Booking.com, "Trips" on Airbnb, usually "My Account > My Bookings" on local agencies. If you booked as a guest, use the "View your booking" link in the email and enter the number and PIN.
Start the cancellation
On the booking detail page tap "Cancel booking" or "Change or cancel booking". Some interfaces first show a "Change dates / Cancel" selection screen, so pick cancel. If you booked on the hotel's own site, use the cancel link inside its "Check reservation" section.
Verify the cancellation fee screen
On the summary screen before final approval, read the "Cancellation fee" or "Amount charged" line. Under free cancellation it shows zero; if any amount appears, do not approve and back out. Once the amount is confirmed, finish with "Confirm cancellation".
Talk to the hotel directly
If the screen shows a fee or you are on a non-refundable rate, call the hotel and explain the situation to the front desk or reservations team. Many hotels will offer a date change, a name change or an open-dated stay even when the system does not require it. Ask for any promise in writing by email.
Keep proof of cancellation
Save the "Your booking has been cancelled" email and screenshot the "Cancelled" status in the app. The booking number, cancellation date and any amount charged should be visible in that record. If a dispute comes up, this is your only evidence.
Track the card refund
In your banking app check "Card Transactions" and the pending or pre-authorisation section to watch for the refund or the hold being released. If you prepaid, the refund appears on the statement as a credit. If it does not arrive in the expected window, open the bank's transaction dispute process.
File a consumer complaint if needed
If you were charged despite the policy, apply to the Consumer Arbitration Committee through the Consumer Application System on the e-Government portal. Attach the confirmation email, the cancellation policy text and your bank statement. The district or provincial committee is assigned automatically based on the disputed amount.
Tips
Watch out
The most common mistake is clicking through a confirmation screen that lists a cancellation fee without reading it; the moment you approve, the charge counts as accepted and is very hard to reverse. Also, simply not showing up without telling the hotel almost always results in the full amount being charged, so always cancel formally.
Frequently asked questions
+Do I have any options with a non-refundable booking?
The system will not give you a free cancellation, but you can ask the hotel directly to move the dates or transfer the booking to someone else. That decision is entirely at the hotel's discretion.
+I booked through an agency site, is calling the hotel enough?
No. If the intermediary platform took the payment, the cancellation must go through that platform; the hotel only drops its own record, while the refund runs through the platform.
+I cancelled but the money has not arrived, what should I do?
First check the refund amount stated in the cancellation email, then contact your bank's transaction dispute line. If that fails, you can apply to the Consumer Arbitration Committee with your documents.
+Is a cancellation made by phone valid?
It is valid, but the burden of proof falls on you. After the call, send the same content by email and ask the hotel or agency for written confirmation.
+Can I cancel part of my stay?
On most platforms you can reduce the number of nights using "Change dates" in the booking details; the price difference and any penalty are shown on that screen.
