How do you communicate by satellite where there is no cell coverage?

Step by step

Check your phone's satellite support

Open Settings > Emergency SOS on iPhone, or Settings > Safety and emergency on Android. If no satellite option appears even though the hardware supports it, the feature has not been enabled for your country. Find this out at home while you still have coverage, not on a mountainside.

Ask your carrier about satellite service

Call Turkcell, Vodafone or Türk Telekom support and ask directly whether they offer satellite messaging or direct-to-cell. There is no commercial package today, but this area moves fast and a pilot announcement could land during the year.

Share your route before you leave

Send two people your destination, your expected return time and the vehicle plate. Download the map for offline use. On a phone without satellite connectivity, your most reliable rescue mechanism is someone who knows what time to start raising the alarm.

Try 112 with no coverage

If the screen reads "Emergency calls only", your phone is not fully cut off: emergency calls route through any other operator that has signal there. You can dial 112 even with no SIM card inserted. Moving to high, open ground noticeably improves your odds of catching a signal.

Rent a satellite device for long rural routes

For trekking, boating or off-road plans that keep you out of coverage for days, rent a satellite messenger. In Turkey these devices are subject to BTK registration, so ask the rental company for the document proving the unit is registered.
