How do you clean white sneakers without turning them yellow?
Yellowing comes from bleach and detergent residue, not dirt; wash in the right order and the shoe stays white.

Short answer
Pull out the laces and insoles, brush off dry dust. Scrub the rubber sole with a baking soda and dish soap paste. For fabric, dissolve one teaspoon of oxygen bleach in 1 litre of 30-40C water, soak 45 minutes, work it in with a soft brush, then rinse twice with plenty of water. Wrap in white paper towels and dry in the shade for 12-24 hours. No chlorine bleach, no radiators.
What you need
Step by step
Remove the laces and insoles
Unthread the laces completely and pull out the insoles. If they stay in place the areas underneath never rinse clean and leave a yellow ring as the shoe dries. Drop the laces in a separate bowl of warm soapy water to soak.
Brush off dry dirt first
Before any water touches the shoe, brush the sole and the fabric with a dry toothbrush and knock off dried mud. Wet dirt spreads into the fibres and sets as a permanent stain. Pick gravel out of the tread grooves with a toothpick.
Scrub the rubber sole with baking soda paste
Mix 1 tablespoon baking soda, 1 teaspoon liquid dish soap and a few drops of water until it reaches toothpaste consistency. Brush it onto the white rubber sole and the midsole strip, wait 10 minutes, then scrub in circles. Baking soda is abrasive, so keep it on rubber only and off the fabric.
Soak the fabric in oxygen bleach solution
Stir 1 teaspoon of oxygen bleach powder into 1 litre of 30-40C water until fully dissolved. Dip a soft brush in the solution and work it over the fabric upper, then leave it 45 minutes. Above 40C the adhesive softens and the sole starts to separate.
Rinse twice with plenty of water
Hold the shoe under running warm water until no more foam appears, then go over it once more with clean water. Leftover alkaline detergent in the fabric is the single most common cause of yellowing. Press the excess water out with your palms; never wring or twist the shoe.
Pick the right machine program if you machine wash
Put the shoes in a pillowcase or mesh bag with two towels for padding. Use "Sportswear" or "Delicate" on Beko and Arcelik, "Delicate/Silks" on Bosch and Siemens, "Delicate Wash" on Samsung, set to 30C with a 400 rpm spin. Use half a dose of detergent and leave the softener and bleach compartments empty.
Wrap in paper towel and dry in the shade
Stuff the inside with white paper towels and wrap the outside in them too. The towel pulls moisture out evenly, so no yellow tide marks form along the edges. Dry in a shaded, breezy spot for 12-24 hours and swap the towels every 4-5 hours as they get damp.
Apply water repellent spray once dry
When the shoes are completely dry, spray two thin coats of water repellent from about 20 cm away, waiting 10 minutes between coats. The coating keeps dirt from sinking into the fibres and makes the next clean much easier. Relace them and store in a cloth bag.
Tips
Watch out
Chlorine bleach (products like Domestos or Ace) yellows white shoes permanently: chlorine breaks down the optical brighteners in the fabric and the adhesive in the sole, so a shoe that looks white after the first wash shifts to a yellow-cream tone within days. That damage cannot be reversed. Tumble dryers and radiators also cause the sole to peel away.
Frequently asked questions
+Why do white shoes turn yellow after washing?
Two reasons: detergent or chlorine residue left in the fabric, and fast, hot drying. Rinse twice with plenty of water and dry in the shade and you avoid most yellowing.
+Can white sneakers go in the washing machine?
Fabric and synthetic shoes can, inside a mesh bag on a 30C delicate cycle with a 400 rpm spin. Keep leather, suede, nubuck and shoes with lights or glued-on trim out of the machine.
+Will already yellowed shoes go back to white?
Residue-based yellowing lightens considerably after a 2-3 hour soak in oxygen bleach. Yellowing from chlorine damage or aged rubber will not come back.
+Does mixing baking soda and vinegar work?
No. They neutralise each other into salty water; the fizzing is just carbon dioxide, not cleaning power. Use them in separate steps if at all.
+Does the same method work on white leather shoes?
No. For leather, wipe with a damp cloth and follow with white leather cream instead of soaking or scrubbing with baking soda; for suede, use only a suede brush and eraser.
