How do you build a one-page CV that fits on a single sheet?

Use a Google Docs template to produce an A4 CV that fits on one page and ships as a PDF, in about 60 to 90 minutes.

Çalışma masasında açık dizüstü bilgisayarda özgeçmiş taslağı, yanında A4 çıktı, kalem, cetvel ve çay bardağı

Short answer

In Google Docs go to File > New > From template gallery and pick a single-column layout under Resumes. Set the page to A4, margins to 1.27 cm, body text to 10-11 pt and line spacing to 1.15. Add your name, contact line, a short summary, your last three roles with three bullets each, education and skills. Then use File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf) and name the file Firstname-Lastname-CV.pdf.

What you need

A Google account with Google Docs (free), or Microsoft Word or LibreOffice Writer
Your work history for the past 10 years: employer, job title, month-year ranges
Eight to ten measurable achievements (revenue growth, error reduction, team size)
A working email address and a current mobile number
Optional: your LinkedIn profile URL and a 600x600 pixel headshot on a plain background
Dates and institution names for your degrees and certificates

Step by step

01

Open a template

Open Google Docs and click Template gallery in the top right. Under Resumes, choose a single-column design such as Serif, Coral or Swiss. Single column matters because two-column layouts confuse applicant tracking systems, which read lines across both columns and scramble the order.

02

Set up the page

Open File > Page setup. Set paper size to A4, orientation to Portrait, and all four margins to 1.27 cm, then click OK. Most printers and HR systems outside North America expect A4; leaving the template on Letter size clips the bottom lines when printed.

03

Fill in the header block

Put your full name at the top at 16-18 pt. Below it, place your mobile number, email, city and LinkedIn URL on one line, separated by vertical bars. Leave out your street address, national ID number and date of birth: they waste space and expose personal data no recruiter needs at this stage.

04

List experience in reverse order

Under an Experience heading, list at most three or four roles, newest first. Give each one a single line reading Title – Company – City – 03/2021-08/2024, then three bullets underneath. Start bullets with a verb and attach a number, for example "Cut monthly reporting from four days to one".

05

Compress education and skills

Put your university, field of study and graduation year on one line under Education, and drop high school entirely if you hold a degree. In Skills, run software, language levels and certificates together with commas across two or three lines. The space you save goes to your experience section.

06

Force it onto one page

Switch on View > Print layout and check where the page breaks. If it overflows, apply these in order: set Format > Line and paragraph spacing to 1.15, drop body text to 10 pt, and shrink jobs older than ten years to a single line each. Never go below 9 pt.

07

Export as PDF

Go to File > Download > PDF Document (.pdf). Rename the file to something like Ahmet-Yilmaz-CV.pdf, using only plain ASCII characters. A PDF renders identically on every machine, while a Word file reflows and shifts lines whenever the recipient lacks your fonts.

08

Run a final check

Open the PDF and test it: dial the phone number, send the email address a message, and click the LinkedIn link. Read the text aloud to catch typos. Then show it to a friend for 20 seconds and ask which three things they remember.

Tips

Tailor a version for each posting: pull five or six keywords from the ad (tools, industry terms, method names) and work them into real bullets you can defend in an interview.
When applying through a job board, upload your own PDF in the "Attach CV" field instead of relying only on the profile the site generates, so you keep control of the formatting.
Write dates as month-year, like 03/2021-08/2024. Listing years alone reads as an attempt to hide gaps, and recruiters ask about it anyway.
Skip star ratings, percentage bars and pie charts for skill levels; parsers read them as nothing and they eat space. Write "Excel: pivot tables, VLOOKUP" instead.
If you use the template's photo frame, insert a square shoulders-up shot on a plain background. Cropped holiday or social media pictures look careless.

Watch out

The most common mistake is sending the CV as a .docx: if the recipient does not have the template's font, lines reflow and your single page spills onto a second. The second most common is wrapping text in tables or text boxes for visual effect, since applicant tracking software often reads those regions as empty and your application looks incomplete.

Frequently asked questions

+How many pages should a CV be?

One page is standard for up to ten years of experience. Academic CVs, senior management roles or long publication lists can justify two pages, but never go to a third.

+Do I have to include a photo?

No. Some markets are used to CVs with photos, so including one causes no harm there, but applications to the US, UK and Canada are normally sent without a photo.

+Should I list references on my CV?

No, they waste space, and the line "references available on request" is filler. Send them as a separate document if HR asks, and get permission from each contact first.

+What do I write if I have no work experience?

Put internships, volunteering, your capstone project, club responsibilities and freelance jobs under the Experience heading in the same format. Name the tools you used and the result you produced.

+Should salary expectations go on the CV?

No. If the posting asks for a figure, put it in your email or the relevant field of the application form, not in the CV itself.
