How do you diagnose a phone that drains its battery fast?
Worn cell or a hungry app? One overnight test separates hardware from software before you pay for a repair.

Short answer
Read battery health first (iPhone: Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging > Maximum Capacity). Then charge to 100%, switch on Airplane Mode, and leave the phone untouched for 8 hours. Losing more than 3% points to a background app, so check the per-app list in Settings > Battery. If capacity is under 80%, the cell itself is the problem, not software.
What you need
Step by step
Read the battery health figure
On iPhone go to Settings > Battery > Battery Health & Charging and note Maximum Capacity. On Samsung open Samsung Members, then Support > Phone diagnostics > Battery status; on Xiaomi use Security > Battery. Anything under 80%, or a 'Weak' label, means the cell is physically worn and no software tweak will fix it.
Run the overnight drain test
Charge to 100%, turn on Airplane Mode, lock the screen and do not touch the phone for 8 hours. In the morning write down the remaining percentage: 1 to 3% loss over 8 hours is normal, while more than 8% signals either a background process or a tired cell. This is the fastest way to split software causes from hardware ones.
Separate screen-on from screen-off drain
On iPhone open Settings > Battery, switch to the Last 24 Hours tab and read the Screen On / Screen Off durations at the bottom. On Samsung check Settings > Battery and device care > Battery > Usage history. Drain that happens with the screen off is a background problem; drain with the screen on is brightness, gaming or video.
Identify the guilty app
On iPhone go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage and tap Show Activity to spot apps with high background time. On Android open Settings > Battery > Battery usage. If one of the top three entries is something you barely use, cut its notification and location permissions.
Confirm it in safe mode
On Android hold the power button, long-press Power off and confirm Restart in safe mode, then leave the phone idle for 4 to 6 hours and measure the loss. A clearly smaller drop means a third-party app is at fault. iPhone has no safe mode, so delete the suspect app and repeat the overnight test.
Check the signal strength
Read signal strength in dBm from Settings > About phone > Status information, or Settings > General > About on iPhone. Worse than -110 dBm means the phone keeps hunting for a tower and burns through the charge. In basements and underground parking, switch to Airplane Mode or Wi-Fi only.
Measure charge speed and heat
Plug in at 20% and check the percentage after exactly 30 minutes; with the original adapter expect a gain of at least 25 to 30 points. If the back gets too hot to hold comfortably while charging, swap the cable and adapter, clear dust from the port, and run the test again.
Decide and book service
If capacity is below 80%, or the drain continues even in safe mode, the battery needs replacing. Before visiting an authorized service center, check warranty status with your IMEI and ask for a written quote. If the drain only appears with one specific app, removing that app is enough.
Tips
Watch out
A swollen battery is a genuine fire hazard. If the back cover is lifting, the screen edge is bulging, or the phone rocks when placed flat on a table, unplug it immediately, stop using the device and take it to an authorized service center. Never try to pry out or puncture a swollen cell, and avoid cheap counterfeit batteries, which carry a high risk of rupture and permanent damage.
Frequently asked questions
+My battery health shows 85%. Should I replace the battery?
No, 85% is considered normal. The usual replacement threshold is below 80%. That said, if the phone shuts down unexpectedly, have it checked regardless of the percentage.
+Why doesn't my Android phone show a battery health percentage?
Most Android builds don't expose it directly. Samsung has it under Samsung Members > Phone diagnostics, Xiaomi under Security > Battery, and on other brands an app like AccuBattery estimates capacity.
+Does leaving the phone charging overnight damage the battery?
Modern phones stop charging at 100%, so a single night does no harm. Still, enabling Optimized Charging or an 85% charge limit in Settings > Battery protects the cell over the long run.
+Battery drain started right after an update. Is something broken?
Usually not. Photo and search re-indexing runs in the background for one to two weeks after an update. If the drain persists past that window, run the overnight idle test again.
+What happens if I get the battery replaced by an unauthorized shop?
You may void any remaining warranty. On iPhones you also get a permanent 'Unknown Part' notice in Settings > General > About, and battery health data can stop displaying entirely.
