How do you fix a dropping modem with channel and DNS fixes?
Stop a Wi-Fi connection that keeps dropping by locking a fixed channel and setting DNS manually, in about 20 minutes.

Short answer
Open 192.168.1.1 in a browser, go to Wireless Settings, change Channel from Auto to 1, 6 or 11 on 2.4 GHz, and set channel width to 20 MHz. Then in WAN/Internet settings enter DNS manually as 1.1.1.1 and 8.8.8.8. Power the modem off for 30 seconds, turn it back on, and watch it for 24 hours.

Identify the type of drop
If a computer is wired to the modem over Ethernet, check whether its connection also dies at the moment of the drop. If only Wi-Fi drops, the cause is channel congestion. If the wired connection drops too and the DSL/Internet light blinks off and on, the problem is on the line side, so channel settings will not help and you should open a fault ticket with your provider.
Log in to the modem interface
Type 192.168.1.1 into the browser address bar; some models use 192.168.0.1 or 192.168.2.1, and the correct one is printed on the modem's bottom label. Enter the username and password on the login screen. On most provider-supplied modems these are admin/admin or the 8-character password printed on the label.
Find the least crowded channel
Install WiFi Analyzer on your phone and open the Channels tab to see where neighbouring networks are clustered. On 2.4 GHz only channels 1, 6 and 11 do not overlap each other, so note which of the three is emptiest. If you use 5 GHz, pick something in the 36-48 range.
Lock the channel and lower the width
In the interface open Wireless / WLAN, then Advanced Settings. Change the Channel field from Auto to the number you picked, and set Channel Width (Bandwidth) to 20 MHz for 2.4 GHz or 80 MHz for 5 GHz. Press Save / Apply; Wi-Fi will drop for 5-10 seconds, which is normal.
Enter DNS addresses manually
In the Internet / WAN menu, edit your connection profile, usually the PPPoE one. Under DNS Settings turn off the automatic option and enter 1.1.1.1 as Primary DNS and 8.8.8.8 as Secondary DNS. This clears up stalls that look like a dead connection but are really name resolution failures.
Restart the modem properly
After saving the settings, press the power button and unplug the modem, wait 30 seconds, then plug it back in. The lights take 2-3 minutes to settle. Do not press the pinhole Reset; that restores factory defaults and wipes everything you just configured.
Check placement and firmware
Move the modem at least 1 metre off the floor, 15-20 cm clear of the wall, and at least 2 metres from a microwave oven. Then open Management / Maintenance in the interface and look at the Software Update or Firmware Upgrade row; install a new version if one is offered, which takes about 5 minutes.
Measure the result over 24 hours
Note any drops across a full day. If it still drops several times a day, check the SNR Margin value on the Status screen: below 6 dB the line is weak, so take a screenshot and open a fault ticket with your provider.

Watch out
Pressing the pinhole reset or using the Restore Factory Defaults button also erases your PPPoE username and password. Those details come in the contract from your provider, and if you do not have them your internet stops working entirely. Always take a configuration backup before resetting.
Frequently asked questions
+Can I use a channel other than 1, 6 or 11?
You can, but performance drops. Channels overlap on the 2.4 GHz band and only 1, 6 and 11 are fully separate, so the ones in between pick up noise from two neighbouring networks.
+Does changing DNS increase my internet speed?
It does not raise download speed, it shortens the delay before pages start loading. When the provider's DNS slows down it feels like a dropped connection, and 1.1.1.1 removes that feeling.
+I do not know the modem interface password, what now?
Check the label on the bottom or back of the modem, where the username and password are printed. If it is missing, call your provider's customer service and ask for the default credentials for your model.
+I did all this and it still drops. What is next?
Photograph the SNR and Attenuation values on the Status screen and open a fault ticket with your provider. If SNR is under 6 dB or you get more than 10 drops a day, the cause is in-building wiring or the exchange.
+Do fiber connections need channel settings too?
Yes. Even if the fiber line itself never drops, the Wi-Fi side suffers from the same congestion, so locking a channel helps on fiber as well.
